Tom has worked for the company for 12 years, taking the reins from his brother-in-law six years ago and growing the client base to include the local council, volume builders and large commercial operations.
“We care about outcomes more than the bottom line and we never cut corners,” Tom says. “We offer a three year warranty but I’ve never had a call back."
Tom credits his success to the quality of Dulux Avista products, his thorough preparation process and the expertise of his team, noting that he had 12 months of learning before he was trusted to go to a job by himself.
“Concrete resurfacing is not something a handyman can do,” Tom says. “The correct preparation and application is crucial.” He has one full time employee, several subcontractors and his son helps out when he’s not in school. The crew are booked out four months in advance, with demand surging post-COVID.
“People were home a lot more, sitting outside looking at their drab, bland old concrete and thinking, this looks terrible! I do a lot of al fresco areas, especially poolside, where I can re-create the look of exposed aggregate with a surface texture that is not so tough on bare feet.”
“I give clients advice on colour, and I can tweak the colour choice to match their home, the fascia, window surrounds or brickwork. Gunmetal and French Grey are popular. I always recommend using a colour fleck, simply because it helps hide dirt, dust and leaves that blow onto the surface.”
Impressed with the performance of Dulux Avista products, Tom remarks, “The resurfacing compound sets harder than concrete, and is so easy to prepare - you just mix in water and colour. It’s versatile because it doesn’t change the surface height like pavers.”
There are occasions when Tom seeks the expertise of Dulux Avista Account Manager, Toby Evans, to ensure he’s using the best product choice for the project. Toby has hands-on experience working in the field as well as extensive product knowledge. One recent large scale project involved coating the tired and drab old concrete concourse of the Prahran Aquatic Centre, as well as the discoloured tiles of the change rooms.
“Toby suggested using Dulux Avista Internal Flooring Waterbased Epoxy Kit with a sand mix. The sand gave it texture, body and grip and it came up magnificent! The epoxy can be used on exterior surfaces provided it has a top coat of Dulux Avista Polyaspartic Sealer to ensure the finish has UV stability.”
Tom is gearing up for a busy summer season, with the warmer weather allowing him to complete jobs with minimal curing time.
“It gets frosty here in winter,” he says. “From June to the end of August, I prefer to do garages or internal floors. A big part of my job is scheduling, and I need to keep one eye on the rain radar to plan projects well.”
